Animation companies like Sunbow, the studio which is now doing The Tick and which has always produced the show, flew their colors at the convention. One of the messages that Sunbow wanted to get out is that the rumors of The Tick's demise are greatly exaggerated. They seemed quite enthusiastic about the new season, which will start in September on not one, but two networks: Fox and Comedy Central.
Not to be outdone, Spumco International Studios, fresh from their settlement with Nickelodeon, had a big presence this year at Anifest. Here you see Spumco Big Shot Jim Smith drawing pictures for the attending fans. In the background is Steve Worth, Webkeeper of "Spumco's Wonderful World of Cartoons, and also Spumco's newest Big Shot.
Most exciting, however, was a rare appearance by Maurice Noble, Chuck Jones' art director and the man responsible for some of the most fun and beautiful settings yet seen in animated cartoons. "Duck Dodgers In The 24 1/2th Century"..."What's Opera, Doc"...the desert vistas of the Road Runner-Coyote series...need I say more? It was a thrill meeting the man, who is still doing conceptual design for animation at the age of 85. Way to go!
But at Anifest, you don't just meet the folks who make the cartoons...you watch them perform! The stage shows at this year's Anifest were some of the best ever.
